Description
The man-made Ural desert, located near the city of Kyshtym in the Chelyabinsk region, is a unique object created by man. This desert is a tailings pond for waste from a graphite mill. A tailings pond is used to receive and store waste from graphite ore processing, called tailings.
The processing plant was built in 1941 after geologists discovered extensive graphite deposits in the area. During the Great Patriotic War, a graphite processing plant from Ukraine was evacuated here. In the post-war years, the Taiga graphite plant became the largest graphite mining plant in the USSR.
Currently, graphite mining continues at the Taiginsky Quarry enterprise. Most of the graphite leads used in pencils were produced at this plant. Despite the fact that the graphite content in the mined rock is low, about 3%, the Taiga enrichment plant compensates for this deficiency.
The Ural desert, although man-made, is impressive with its landscapes and atmosphere. Many tourists visit this place for unusual photo sessions and picnics. In order to get to the desert, you need to focus on the city of Kyshtym and drive south along the road towards the villages of Kaolinovy and Taiginka, then you should drive about 12 kilometers along this road. Along the way, you can also visit Lake Anbash and Ural Bali, which will add additional experiences to your trip.
