Description

The Orenburg Regional Drama Theater named after M. Gorky is one of the oldest theaters in Russia. It was founded in 1856 by entrepreneur Boris Klimovich Solovyov, who brought his troupe to the city of Orenburg. Despite the lack of financial support from the authorities, the professional theater's performances were shown for two seasons.

The theater building was reconstructed in 1868 by order of the Orenburg governor N.A. Kryzhanovsky. After reconstruction, the theater officially opened on January 14, 1869. In the history of the theater there are many famous names of entrepreneurs and actors, such as P. A. Strepetova, Modest Pisarev, Vladimir Andreev-Burlak and others.

The theater staged performances based on the works of Maxim Gorky, in whose honor it was named in 1932. Over the years, both classical works and modern plays, as well as Leninist events, were staged on the theater stage. The theater has repeatedly turned to the image of Emelyan Pugachev.

Since the establishment of Soviet power, the theater has been actively working to expand its repertoire and improve conditions for spectators. At different periods, the theater was headed by famous directors, and a branch of the Moscow Art Theater School-Studio also operated at the theater.

The theater has undergone several reconstructions, the last of which was completed in 2006. Currently, the theater building has modern conditions for productions and seats 429 spectators.

This theater played a significant role in the cultural life of Orenburg and the entire region, being a place where city residents could enjoy professional theatrical productions. From its founding to the present day, it has continued to be an important cultural center, presenting a variety of performances, enriching the cultural heritage of the region and continuing the tradition of high art.
