Description

The Yumaguzinskaya hydroelectric power station (HPP) is located on the Belaya River in the Kugarchinsky district of Bashkortostan. It is part of the production division of the Salavat Thermal Power Plant, owned by Bashkir Generating Company LLC. The hydroelectric power station was created in a narrow mountain valley, and the flood area of valuable land here is small.

However, the construction of the Yumaguzinskaya hydroelectric power station caused criticism due to the flooding of the lands of the Bashkiria National Park and the reduction of the habitats of some rare species of animals and plants. Concerns have also been raised about the deterioration of water quality in the reservoir and the Belaya River, as well as the loss of water from the reservoir into underground karst voids.

The idea of creating a reservoir to solve the problems of water supply to industrial areas of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic originated in the 1970s. However, work begun on the construction of a reservoir on the Belaya River was suspended in 1989 due to active protest from the environmental movement. Later, a project was developed for a cascade of three reservoirs on the Belaya River with smaller flood areas. The Yumaguzinskaya HPP was the first object of this project, construction of which began in 1998.

Construction of the hydroelectric power station proceeded quickly. The Belaya River was blocked on June 10, 2003, and the first hydraulic unit was launched in December 2004. On July 21, 2007, the hydroelectric power station was officially put into operation. The reservoir of the Yumaguzinskaya HPP covers an area of 35.6 square kilometers with a total volume of 890 million cubic meters.

The main task of creating the Yumaguzinskaya HPP is to solve problems with flooding of territories during floods, as well as to ensure water supply and electricity generation. The hydroelectric power station is part of the Kumertau Thermal Power Plant and has an electrical capacity of 45 MW.
