Description

The impact crater, which appeared as a result of an iron meteorite weighing more than 300 kg falling to Earth, was recorded on May 17, 1990 at 23:20. This celestial object received number 180 in the USSR meteorite inventory. The meteorite crater is located in the field of the former Sterlitamak state farm, 20 kilometers west of the city of Sterlitamak in the Republic of Bashkortostan.

The crater itself was discovered only on the second day after the meteorite fell. Its diameter is approximately 10 meters and its depth is about 4 meters. After the collision with the ground, soil was thrown out of the crater, forming a low (about 50 cm) earthen rampart.

Within a radius of up to 70 meters from the crater, several dozen small melted iron fragments were discovered, as well as two large fragments weighing 363 and 875 grams. Small magnetic balls were found in the ground within a radius of 150 meters from the crater. When exploring the crater at a depth of about 8 meters, two massive meteorite fragments were discovered, one of which weighed 6.6 kg, and the second - 3.06 kg. The largest meteorite fragment weighing 315 kilograms was discovered on June 1, 1991.

Currently, at the site of the meteorite fall, a small lake has formed, on the shores of which honey-bearing and medicinal plants grow, and in the reservoir itself there are small crucian carp. Some of the meteorite fragments are stored in the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography of the city of Ufa.
