Description
The Baksan Neutrino Observatory, owned by the Institute of Nuclear Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INR RAS), is a unique scientific facility located in the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, not far from Mount Elbrus. It is built into the rock for four kilometers and has served as a center for obtaining the latest knowledge about the Universe and particle physics for almost half a century.
The observatory carries out research in the field of nuclear physics, elementary particles, cosmic ray physics and neutrino astrophysics. The underground structures of the observatory are located in two parallel tunnels, about 3670 meters long, which penetrate into the thickness of Mount Andyrchi. The thickness of the mountain helps reduce the radioactive background and protects detectors from the flow of cosmic rays. In addition, low-radioactive concrete was used for construction.
Scientific research at the observatory is carried out using specialized facilities, such as the Carpet facility, which detected the signature of an energetic cosmic photon, attracting the attention of the scientific community.
To visit the observatory, you can take advantage of excursions organized by the Tanex company in Kislovodsk, or travel by your own car from the regional center of Tyrnyauz. The Baksan Neutrino Observatory offers excursions on weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a visit to this scientific facility promises to be interesting and educational for anyone interested in astrophysics and fundamental physics.
