Description

Sultan Waterfall is one of the most impressive and spectacular waterfalls in the northern Elbrus region. It is located at the tops of the Malki River, on the territory of Kabardino-Balkaria, just a few kilometers from the ice fields of Mount Elbrus.

The source of the Malki River is located at the famous Ullu-Chiran glacier. Flowing between rocky slopes, the river gains great power and forms several waterfalls, including the Sultan Falls, which is the highest and most memorable. The height of the water fall is about 40 meters. In summer, powerful jets of water take on a gray hue as sand and clay are washed away from melting glaciers. The roar from the falling water is so strong that it is almost impossible to talk next to it.

In the immediate vicinity of the Sultan Falls are warm springs known as Djilysu, often called “silver” because of the beautiful silvery hue of the water. Sultan Waterfall is located near the Narzan Valley. This powerful and transparent stream of water falls from a height into a dark gorge, and is considered the highest along the Malka River. Down the river are three more waterfalls, each with their own unique beauty.

The Sultan can be seen by approaching it from the gentle slopes covered with grass and flowers. However, its power is especially impressive when viewed from afar, especially if there is a person in the background who looks tiny and fragile. The waterfall is considered the largest in Kabardino-Balkaria, and in winter its beauty is no less impressive with thirty-meter icicles.
