Description

The history of the village of Liinakhamari is rich in events associated with periods of military conflicts and geopolitical changes. Part of the Russian Empire since the 1800s, Liinahamari became an important ocean port for Finland after its independence in 1917.

Liinakhamari's importance increased further with the construction of the Arctic Ocean Road in 1931, which attracted tourists and made the port easier to access by car.

During the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940 and the Great Patriotic War, the port of Liinakhamari became a key base for supplying strategically important deposits with nickel and other resources, and also became an important maritime base for the Kriegsmarine.

After the end of the Soviet-Finnish war in 1944 and the conclusion of the Moscow Armistice, Liinakhamari became part of the Murmansk region of the RSFSR. The port was captured by Soviet troops, and monuments dedicated to the feat of the naval landing appeared on its territory.

The post-war years brought the development of military and agricultural infrastructure in Liinakhamari, including submarine bases, a division of small missile ships and other facilities.

Today there is a border outpost and a production cooperative in the village. Liinahamari's historical journey from an important Finnish port to a military base in the Soviet Union to a modern border village reflects the complex changes in the region over many decades.
