Description
Zavolzhsky Monastery in the name of the Prophet Elijah is a convent of the Samara diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, located in the village of Podgory, Volzhsky district, Samara region. The monastery was created in 2006 on the basis of the parish of the Samara Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh.
The history of the monastery began in 1993, when an Orthodox parish church was created in the village of Podgory in honor of the Prophet Elijah. In 1998, restoration work began on the surviving stone church of this parish, built in 1860-1890. In 2003, a skete of a monastic community was founded in the village, which was formed at the Samara Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh. This monastery was converted into a convent by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on April 11, 2006.
By July 2008, more than 20 nuns lived in the monastery under the direction of the abbess, nun Anastasia.
The monastery was rebuilt on the basis of the former parish church in the name of the Prophet Elijah in the village of Podgory. At the same time, a wooden church was erected in the monastery in the name of the Hieromartyr Konstantin Sukhov, consecrated on October 22, 2007, as well as a house church in the name of the Great Martyr Anastasia the Pattern Maker.
On the territory of the monastery, enclosed by a stone fence, there are stone and wooden cells, as well as a bathhouse, water supply and various workshops: sewing, gold embroidery, embroidery and icon painting.
The monastery hosts a full range of services conducted by the brethren of the Zavolzhsky Monastery. In addition, in Samara there is a city courtyard of the monastery, on the territory of which a temple was built in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”.
The first abbess of the monastery was nun Anastasia (in the world Irina Petrovna Shestun), then Abbess Nina (Mekhanikova) became the abbess.
