Description

Koptev Ravine, located in the Sokoli Mountains on the left bank of the Volga, attracts the attention of historians and adventure lovers with its rich history and unique flora and fauna.

The name "Koptev" probably comes from the word "soot", indicating a supposed activity related to the production of resin or tar. According to legend, in the 19th century there was the estate of the boyar Koptev, whose remains, in the form of the foundations of a house, can still be seen next to the Birch Grove.

Mentions of the ravine have been found since the beginning of the 19th century, in the records of the famous scientist and traveler P. S. Pallas. In the mid-19th century, the ravine became associated with a supposed Old Believer event before Easter in 1844 and the construction of a pipe factory during the Russo-Japanese War in the early 20th century.

The surrounding area of the ravine is famous for its unique flora and fauna. In Soviet times, apple and orchards were located here, but now an oak grove and deciduous forests have been preserved.

The Kopteva ravine is connected to the village of Upravlencheskiy on the steep right bank. Along the bottom of the ravine there is a road that allows you to get to the shore of the Volga, the health resort and the cave of the Greve Brothers. The stream, known as the “Vonyuchka River,” dries up in dry years and is fed from an artificial lake formed as a result of the construction of the Volzhskoye Highway embankment.

The height difference is about 170 meters, and a spiral road connects the ravine with the health resort and the observation deck area. This historical and natural site attracts the attention of tourists and researchers with its mysterious atmosphere and unique beauty.
