Description

The Assumption Church, also known as the Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Prince's Court, is an Orthodox church in the city of Suzdal, located in the Vladimir region of Russia. It is located in the eastern part of the Suzdal Kremlin and is part of the Vladimir diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. Probably built in the 17th century. The exact date of construction of the church is unknown, but it is assumed that the stone church was erected on the site of a burnt wooden one in 1650.

After a serious fire in 1719, the Assumption Church was rebuilt, receiving the Naryshkin Baroque style, which is atypical for Suzdal. The temple was decorated with a tented bell tower with a chapel in the name of Sergius and Nikon of Radonezh (XVII-XVIII centuries) and was surrounded by a low fence with a small gate. Expert on ancient Russian architecture Nikolai Voronin described the church as "one of the modest but elegant monuments of Suzdal."

The Assumption Church faced the threat of destruction in 1926, when the leadership of the political isolation ward located in the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery proposed demolishing either the Assumption or Afanasyevskaya Church to use the bricks in construction. The director of the Suzdal museum, Vasily Romanovsky, proposed preserving the Assumption Church as a more interesting architectural object.

In 1958, the church was restored by Alexei Varganov. On December 31, 2009, the temple was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and assigned to the Alexander Monastery. In subsequent years, work was carried out to restore the bell tower and update the interior decoration. In 2013, the church was consecrated and the first service was led by Metropolitan of Vladimir and Suzdal Evlogiy (Smirnov).
