Description

The Bishops' Chambers is a unique complex of ancient Russian civil architecture, located on the territory of the Suzdal Kremlin and under the management of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. At the end of the 17th century, on the site of the ancient courtyard of the Suzdal spiritual rulers, next to the 13th century Nativity Cathedral, a majestic ensemble of the Bishops' Chambers was erected by order of Metropolitan Hilarion. This complex was connected by a passage gallery with a bell tower from 1635, the top of which ended with a tent, and the facade was decorated with a chiming clock with Cyrillic alphabet instead of numbers.

Passing through the western portal of the cathedral, one can enter the bishop's chambers, completed with a miniature tent covered with green tiles. Under Metropolitan Hilarion, a three-story northern building was built, including an open gallery with a closet and a cellar, as well as two-story chambers with living quarters and storage rooms. The architecture of these chambers is an excellent example of ancient Russian residential architecture, with its asymmetrical arrangement of windows, vertical division and different heights of compositional parts.

The Bishop's Chambers are a unique complex that unites buildings of different periods from the 13th, 16th and 17th centuries into a single ensemble. The western building has the most picturesque and asymmetrical character, where elements of wooden architecture are used. While the northern corps, of later origin, is distinguished by rigor and regularity. Over the centuries of its existence, the architecture of these chambers has gone through numerous alterations and repairs, as a result of which its ancient architectural integrity was distorted.

In the period from 1941 to 1968, a lot of work was carried out on the research and restoration of the bishop's chambers under the leadership of A.D. Varganov, as a result of which it was possible to preserve the original appearance of the complex. Currently, the bishop's chambers house exhibitions, office space and storage facilities of the Suzdal Museum. The bishop's house was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.
