Description

The Robe Deposition Monastery is a historically significant convent located in the center of the city of Suzdal. It is one of the few monasteries in Russia that were founded before the Mongol invasion and have an ancient history. The existing ensemble of buildings of the monastery was formed mainly in the 16th-17th centuries, but the buildings in the northern part of the monastery were destroyed in Soviet times.

The monastery was founded in 1207 by the Suzdal bishop John and was initially located outside the city fortifications. In ancient times, the monastery was located on the territory of Posad, which was outside the city walls. There are several descriptions of the location of the monastery from different historical sources that help to visualize its location.

The original buildings of the monastery were wooden and have not survived to this day. However, the Deposition of Robe Cathedral, built at the beginning of the 16th century, has been preserved. At the end of the 17th century, under the leadership of famous Suzdal architects, the famous double-tented gates of the Deposition of the Robe Monastery were erected, and a richly decorated porch was added to the western part of the cathedral.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the 72-meter-high Venerable Bell Tower was built on the territory of the monastery. The last building on the territory of the monastery was the Sretenskaya Refectory Church in 1882.

The monastery was closed in 1923 and used for various purposes during the Soviet era before being transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1999 and reopened as a convent. Now the monastery is a historical and architectural monument that attracts the attention of tourists and believers. The surviving buildings of the monastery, such as the Deposition of the Robe Cathedral, the Holy Gate and the Venerable Bell Tower, are cultural heritage sites and excellent examples of Russian architecture.
