The Church of the Apostle Philip and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on Nutnaya Street in Veliky Novgorod is a significant Orthodox church that embodies the rich history and cultural heritage of the city.
The first stone church on this site was built in 1383-1384 by mayors Rodislav Danilovich, Ustin and Philip. However, over time, two independent parish churches were built on this site - the Church of Philip the Apostle and the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. They were erected in 1527-1528 by local and Moscow merchants on the same foundation. In the 17th century, these churches were united into one parish.
In 1899, the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was almost completely dismantled, leaving only the western wall and some traces of other parts. However, during the Khrushchev anti-religious campaign in 1962, the church was seized as a museum, and the parish community was transferred to the Philippov Church. In 1969-1970, work began on the restoration of the monument, and in 1977 construction began according to the design of Nineli Kuzmina.
As a result of the efforts of Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov) and other supporters of the temple, the architectural monument was restored in the forms of the 16th century, preserving the western porch and the bell tower of the 18th century. Today, this temple continues to serve as a place of worship and is an important cultural heritage site of the city.
In the church fence there is also the grave of the Novgorod local historian Vasily Peredolsky, and his house was recreated for the needs of the diocesan spiritual and educational center.
