Description

The Hanseatic Fountain was created in Veliky Novgorod as part of the International Cultural and Economic Forum "XXIX Hanseatic Days of Modern Times", which was held in June 2009. The fountain is a circle of granite with a diameter of eight meters, symbolizing a negotiating table, around which 16 apple trees are planted. Along the perimeter of the circle there are images of the coats of arms of 16 countries that are part of the Hanseatic League of the New Age.

The composition of the fountain is completed by a bronze sculpture known as the “Hansean Sign”. This memorial sign, installed on the right bank of the Volkhov River at Yaroslav's Court, depicts two ancient sailing ships: a Hanseatic cogg and a Novgorod boat. Instead of sails, the ships depict two intertwined trees, symbolizing the unity of countries and times.

The Hanseatic League of the New Age unites more than 170 cities from 15 European countries. It also includes cities that were not members of the medieval Hansa, but had trade relations with it. Veliky Novgorod became the first Russian city to join this union in 1993. In total, 13 Russian cities are included in the “New Hansa”.
