Description

Khoroshev Kurgan, also known as Khoroshev Kurgan, is located near the village of Golubinskaya in the Kalachevsky district of the Volgograd region, approximately 106 kilometers from Volgograd. This mound witnessed the heroic events of World War II.

In July 1942, when Wehrmacht troops were advancing towards Stalingrad, the approaches to the city were defended by troops of the 62nd Army under the command of Major General V. Ya. Kolpakchi. As a result of a successful counterattack by the 1st Tank Army, led by Major General of Artillery K. S. Moskalenko, it was possible to prevent the encirclement of Soviet troops by Nazi troops just 100 kilometers before Stalingrad. The monument erected on the Khoroshev mound is dedicated to these events and the soldiers who fought at this time.

On December 22, 1992, a memorial was opened on the Khoroshev mound, dedicated to the soldiers of the 1st Tank Army who stopped the Nazi troops in July 1942. The monument is also dedicated to Lieutenant Colonel P.I. Khoroshev, brigade commander of the 1st Tank Army.

On the territory of the mound there is also a mass grave in which Red Army soldiers who died in battles in the area are buried. The grave contains both known and unknown military personnel. The monument was erected in 1950 and is constantly being updated with new burials as a result of search work in the surrounding area.

The Khoroshev Kurgan became a symbol of the heroism and perseverance of Soviet soldiers in the battle for Stalingrad and recalls the feat of those who defended their land during the difficult times of the war.
