Description

The Kadargavan Canyon, part of the famous Kurtatinsky Gorge in North Ossetia, is an impressive natural phenomenon. Situated among alpine meadows and bright green slopes, the canyon impresses with its majestic beauty. The old peaks, shrouded in light fog, tend to the cloudy heights, and the Fiagdon River flows along the bottom, carrying its fast waters.

In the past, there was a crossing connecting both banks of the Fiagdon River, and then there was a road through the Kadargavan Pass, along which the mountaineers led trade caravans to Ingushetia and Georgia.

According to ancient legends, in ancient times, luxurious forests flourished in this area, where valuable tree species grew. Wood from Kurtatin was an important source of income for local residents, and only thanks to the crossing they could export their goods outside of North Ossetia. Therefore, the Kadargavan Canyon was named the place of timber pass.

The canyon itself is a gorge surrounded by rocks, the average width of which is about 4 meters, and the depth in some places reaches more than 60 meters. At the bottom of the canyon flow the waters of the Fiagdon River, which has cut its channel in the rocky firmament.

During the period of rains and spring floods, the Fiagdon River becomes especially powerful, rolling over rapids and cascades, filling the canyon with loud noise.

The canyon is also famous for its diversity of wildlife. Here you can find various species of mammals and birds, many of which are included in the Red Book.

The canyon itself, its cliffs, the river and the surrounding nature make this a unique place to visit and explore.
