Description

The Church of St. George the Victorious, built in the 19th century in the old Russian-Byzantine style, is a symbol of memory and faith. It is dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus' and the 55th anniversary of the Great Victory. Construction of the Temple began on June 22, 1999, with a ceremony to illuminate the construction site and lay the first foundation.

In October of the same year, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II visited the Temple under construction, and along with it a commemorative time capsule with a message to descendants was laid. The following year, the main eleven-meter dome, weighing about eight tons, was installed and illuminated. Construction was completed in 2002, and in May of the same year the opening of the Temple and the first services took place.

Today, the Church of St. George the Victorious has the status of a monument and serves as a place of worship and remembrance of those who died over the years, including the victims of the Great Patriotic War, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and the fire in the Samara city police department building in February 1999.

Near the Church of St. George the Victorious, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the end of the Great Victory, a high relief of the “Sorrowful Motherland” was installed.
