Description

On July 8, 2011, before the celebration of the All-Russian Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, a sculptural composition dedicated to Peter and Fevronia was installed in the park on Glory Square in the Russian city of Samara. This monument has become a significant place in the city, attracting the attention of newlyweds on their important day. The height of the monument is 4.6 meters, it is made of bronze and is considered the largest in Russia. The author of this work is the famous sculptor Konstantin Chernyavsky.

The sculptural composition depicts Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom, who are considered patrons of family fidelity and love. They are presented on a boat, holding each other's hands. Peter has a wedding ring in his hand, and Fevronia has a symbol of peace, a dove. This image symbolizes the restoration of strong family ties and happy marriages.

According to legend, the great Murom prince Peter, having become seriously ill, heard from a Divine message that Fevronia, whom he was supposed to marry, would heal him. Despite opposition from the local nobility due to her commoner origins, Peter abdicated the throne to be with Fevronia. Their union was an example of devotion and love. In old age they took monastic vows and died on the same day. According to legend, their bodies were found nearby and reburied near the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Murom. In 1547 they were canonized.
