Description
The Church of St. George, also known as the Samara Church, is an Evangelical Lutheran church located in the city of Samara. The community of this church is part of the Samara bishopric of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the European Part of Russia. The construction of the church was initiated by the Russian merchant Yegor Nikitich Annaev in 1854. Initially, the plan was to build a Roman Catholic church for the Catholic community of Samara, but due to the negative attitude of the authorities towards Polish and Catholic interests, the building was transferred to local Lutherans in 1864.
The church building was almost completed by 1863, but at that time an uprising against the Russian Empire began in the Kingdom of Poland, which led to changes in the fate of the building. As a result of an agreement with E. N. Annaev and the Catholic community, the church was transferred to the Lutherans, and in 1865 it was consecrated.
The church became a spiritual center for the German population of the Samara province. It acted as an educational center, providing a kindergarten and school for children from German families. In 1875, the church was damaged by fire, but was restored and expanded with new buildings.
After the October Revolution of 1917, the church continued its activities, but since 1930 it was closed by the authorities, and the building was used for various needs, including atheistic propaganda events.
In 1991, an Evangelical Lutheran community was created in Samara, and the church was transferred to them. After renovation work, the church was re-consecrated in 1994, and since then regular services have been held here. Since 2003, a mechanical organ has also been installed in the church.
