Description
The building of the Samara State Philharmonic, as it can be seen today, was constructed on the site of the former Olimp Circus Theater. This circus was built in 1907 according to the design of architect Platon Vasilyevich Shamansky and was located closer to the intersection of modern-day Frunze and L. Tolstoy streets. The circus building had an elegant appearance with tall windows, reliefs, and a corner entrance. It housed a large auditorium with 1100 seats and had its own permanent concert orchestra. Besides circus performances, the venue hosted opera and drama artists' performances, as well as lectures by renowned scholars.
Since 1940, the circus-theater building became the home of the Samara State Philharmonic. In 1974, a decision was made to reconstruct the building, leading to the complete demolition of the old Olimp. The new Philharmonic building was erected slightly further from the intersection. The architect of the new building was Yuri Vasilyevich Khramov, who managed to preserve many architectural features of the old building. In 1988, the new building opened its doors to audiences and continues to serve as a venue for concerts, music lectures, and other cultural events to this day.
