Description

The Perkal rock in Pyatigorsk, named after a forester named Perkhalsky, keeps many secrets and historical events.

Let's start with its name. It turns out that it does not come from the fictional Perkalsky or Perkalov, but from a real person named Perkhalsky. This forester probably came to the Caucasus in the early 1830s, possibly as a result of participation in the Polish uprising of 1830-1831. Perhalsky was first a soldier, but then became a forest observer. He lived for many years on the slope of Mashuk, and his surname became attached to the area, including the rock and guardhouse named in his honor.

One of the secrets associated with the Perkal Rock concerns the death of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov. There is a version, confirmed by some sources, that the poet’s duel with Major Martynov took place right here, next to the rock. Despite the fact that a special commission in 1881 established a different place for the duel, Perkalskaya Rock had many supporters of this version. They referred to the testimony of local residents and the protocols of the investigative commission, which pointed to this place as the site of the fight.

But the Perkal Rock is interesting not only for its connection with history and legends. Here archaeologists have discovered settlements and burial grounds dating back to ancient eras, including the first millennium BC. On the slopes of the rock you can find interesting fossils, such as an onyx vein and fragments of ceramic vessels depicting the Caucasus range.

Today, the Perkal Rock and its surroundings attract not only historians and archaeologists, but also lovers of nature and excursions. Here is the Perkala Arboretum, which at one time was one of the centers of attraction for holidaymakers and tourists. The Arboretum is famous for its exotic plants and is an important scientific and cultural site.

Thus, the Perkal Rock in Pyatigorsk embodies not only natural beauty and tranquility, but also the rich history and cultural heritage of this unique region.
