Description
The site of M. Yu. Lermontov's duel on Mount Mashuk in Pyatigorsk is a significant historical landmark. Here, on July 15, 1841, the great Russian poet died in a duel with Major N.S. Martynov.
At different periods, temporary monuments were erected at this site. A temporary monument was unveiled in 1901, followed by a permanent monument in 1915. The monument was a stone obelisk and a bronze bust of the poet. A fence was built around it, consisting of concrete posts and metal chains symbolizing bullets.
However, the sculptor B. M. Mikeshin, who created the monument, was not satisfied with the changes made to his project. He expressed his indignation at the fence, considering it “anti-artistic and ugly.” However, the fence was preserved.
Today, the site of M. Yu. Lermontov’s duel on Mount Mashuk remains an important cultural heritage site. The obelisk with a bronze bust of the poet continues to attract tourists and city residents, recalling the tragic death of the outstanding Russian poet.
