Mars Landscape (Chernozemelsky District)
Natural wonder- 1 094 views
Description
The "Mars" landscape is a patch of severely desiccated ground in the Chernozemelsky District of the Republic of Kalmykia, Russia (coordinates 45.691986, 45.702782). It earned its nickname for its otherworldly look: the ground is covered in salt streaks, deep desiccation cracks, and ochre-brown bands. Many people search for the exact coordinates of "Mars" to find this unusual spot in the steppe.
The cracked, salt-crusted surface results from severe drying of the soil. The site lies within a broader zone of land degradation and desertification that covers much of the Chernozemelsky District on the Caspian Lowland, between the lower reaches of the Kuma and Volga rivers. Similar arid, semi-desert terrain is common across Kalmykia, which journalists and travelers often describe as otherworldly, almost like another planet.
The same district is home to the Chyornye Zemli (Black Lands) nature reserve, established to protect the saiga antelope population and support ecological research. The harsh climate and soil conditions of the Chernozemelsky District shaped this Martian-looking landscape, which is well known to organized tour groups that come here to see the unusual desert scenery near the reserve.
