Wild Tulips
Description
The wild tulips of the Tselinny district in the Republic of Kalmykia are located on a steppe plot where the annual blooming occurs each spring, reaching its peak during the second half of April. This natural site provides a viewing point for those interested in the region's unique flora and seasonal blooming cycles.
The location is situated on the Yergeni Upland, which is part of the East European Plain. This region is characterized by an arid climate with unstable moisture and a landscape of small rivers that typically dry up during the dry season. The local environment shapes the growth patterns of the steppe's vegetation, creating a distinctive landscape.
Three native species of wild tulips bloom here in a specific sequence. The flowering starts with white tulips, which are locally referred to as "podsnezhniks" (snowdrops). These are followed by the yellow Tulipa biebersteiniana and finally the red Tulipa schrenkii (also known as the tulip of Schrenk or Gesner), which concludes the season's bloom.
These wild tulips are protected species and are included in both regional and national Red Books. As such, picking the flowers is strictly prohibited to preserve the local ecosystem and the integrity of the steppe.
