Description
The Museum of Socialist Life in Kazan is a unique place where visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past, specifically in the 1960–1980s of the 20th century, and learn more about life in the USSR. The museum was created in order to preserve and pass on to future generations the heritage of that time.
The museum was founded in the early 1990s, when Rustem Valiakhmetov, the future director, began collecting rare items from Soviet everyday life that were on the verge of extinction. At that time, most people got rid of such things, considering them obsolete. Then the exhibits moved to a communal apartment for 20 people, where the museum is located today. This room was filled with attributes of Soviet life, and Valiakhmetov himself, being a famous photographer and designer, created a unique atmosphere that transports visitors to the past.
The museum offers not only to view the exhibits, but also to feel like a part of the Soviet era thanks to its authentic environment. Here you can see many household items of that time, as well as plunge into the atmosphere of a 19th century communal apartment, thanks to the building chosen for the museum.
The museum regularly attracts thousands of tourists who come to Kazan in search of cultural and educational recreation. All funds collected from tickets and the sale of souvenirs are used to develop the museum and replenish its collection. The gift shop offers unique Soviet-era items that are hard to find anywhere else, and each one is an authentic artifact.
