Description
The monument to Catherine II's carriage in Kazan was erected in 1990 in honor of the empress's significant visit in 1767. Catherine II visited Kazan in the spring of 1767 during her trip along the Volga, and she stayed in the city for five days, exceeding the length of stay in other cities on the route. During this time, the Empress actively participated in church services, met representatives of the nobility and took part in city festivities. Her visit was also linked to the introduction of laws and conditions that take into account the multi-ethnic population of the city, as well as permission to build new mosques.
For Catherine II's trip around Kazan, 300 traveling carriages were prepared, and one of them, luxurious and spacious, was used by the Empress to explore the city. At the end of her visit, Catherine II presented this carriage to the Archbishop of Kazan. In 1889, the carriage was transferred to the city authorities.
The monument to Catherine II's carriage in Kazan, made of cast iron, is an exact copy of the Empress's gift. It was installed on one of the city's pedestrian streets and became a popular subject for tourist photography. The monument symbolizes the historical visit of Catherine II to Kazan and recalls her significant role in the development of the city and the strengthening of interfaith peace.
