Description

The Carmen Massif is a hilly ridge whose outline resembles a sleeping monster. It lies in the southern part of the Burtinskaya Steppe section of the Orenburg Nature Reserve, in the Belyayevsky District of Orenburg Oblast, and supports a mix of rocky, shrub, meadow and steppe vegetation.

Mount Carmen forms part of a cuesta-like ridge with a gentle slope on the south-west side and a steep, precipitous slope on the south-east. It covers 137.6 hectares, and its highest point reaches 381.9 metres. The slopes carry humus-rich soils, especially on the south-eastern side, where a section exposing layers of red boulder conglomerate has been found.

Local legend links the massif's name to a wealthy landowner called Carmen. He is said to have ordered his servants to hide the springs so invaders could not use these natural resources. After Carmen's death, foreign conquerors could not find the springs and were left without access to water, and the hills have carried his name ever since.

The legend still draws people who try to find the hidden springs, but they remain undiscovered to this day.
