Description

The Tuzlukkol salt tract, also known as Tuzlukkol mud, lies 9.5 km southwest of the village of Burlyksky in the Belyaevsky District of Orenburg Oblast, Russia. It is a hydrogeological and balneological natural monument covering 21.9 hectares, known for its mineral mud and unique water sources.

Geology and Hydrogeology

The tract lies in the valley of the Tuzlukkol River, where spring outlets bring sulphate-calcium and calcium-sodium waters to the surface, alongside a self-flowing well of highly mineralised chloride-sodium water. Geologically, the salt marsh formed where salt and gypsum of the Kungurian stage of the Permian period lie close to the surface, at the core of a salt dome. Karst pockets in the gypsum are filled with cherry-red clay and ochre-brown pebbles.

Mineral Mud and Water

The Tuzlukkol floodplain holds reserves of balneological-grade mineral mud, used by local residents and visitors for self-treatment. The mineral waters here are notably rich in chlorides and sodium. In 1949 the water had a chloride-calcium composition, but after a well was drilled in later years, it changed to chloride-sodium, with mineralisation reaching up to 107.3 g/l.

History and Legend

According to legend, a salty spring called "Maiden's Tears" flows in the tract, linked to the tragic story of a bride whose heart was broken.

A. S. Khomenovsky, who studied the waters and mud of Tuzlukkol, recommended building a steppe sanatorium here based on these resources, similar to the Staraya Russa resort.

Present Day

Today the tract draws tourists seeking the healing properties of its mud and mineral waters. However, taking mud from the site and setting up tent camps are both prohibited under the area's protected status.

Nature and Recreation

The Tuzlukkol tract is a unique place for rest and treatment thanks to its natural resources. Because of its protected status, unaccompanied visits, mud collection and camping in the area are all forbidden. It continues to attract people seeking balneotherapy and recreation, offering a chance to enjoy the beauty of nature and the benefits of its mineral resources.
