Description
The Blyavtamaksky Volcano (Блявтамакский вулкан) is a regional nature monument in the Kuvandyksky urban district of Orenburg Region, near the village of Blyavtamak, about 9 km north of Mednogorsk. It is not an active volcano but the relic of an ancient, Middle Devonian volcanic structure: rocky outcrops above the floodplain of the Kuragan River, built of hardened lava and volcanic rock.
Geology
The site exposes vent deposits of liparite porphyrite, together with near-vent bomb-and-block tuffs and lavas of andesite porphyrite and basalt. Vent stocks of liparite porphyrite form the core of tall rocky outcrops hanging over the Kuragan floodplain. The volcano's main vent lies hidden beneath the floodplain itself, while a second body of liparite porphyry reaches the surface as a tall rocky outcrop about one kilometre north of Blyavtamak, on the right bank of the Kuragan. The rocks carry fine disseminated pyrite and, in places, thin veins of malachite.
History of the volcano and the village
The Blyavtamaksky Volcano was active in the Middle Devonian, hundreds of millions of years ago, when a chain of volcanoes existed in what is now eastern Orenburg Region. Their eruptions left behind thick effusive rock sequences and deposits of sulphide ore. Among these ancient structures, two are the best expressed in today's relief — the Blyavtamaksky and Nizhnegusikhinsky volcanoes.
The name of the village of Blyavtamak translates from Bashkir as "mouth of the Blyava" — after the Blyava River, which flows into the Kuragan here. The Blyava is 41 km long, with its source to the south and its mouth right by the village. According to tradition, the village was founded in the mid-19th century, when one of the sons of a local forefather settled on the spot.
Protection
The Blyavtamaksky Volcano holds the status of a geological-geomorphological nature monument of regional significance and is included in the list of specially protected natural territories of regional significance in Orenburg Region (order of the regional Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of 21 February 2023, No. 69). A special protection regime applies on the territory, and the Mednogorsk urban district's master plan sets a protective buffer zone around the monument with restrictions on economic activity.
Getting there
The nearest landmark is the village of Blyavtamak, on the left bank of the Kuragan about 9 km north of central Mednogorsk; buses run between the two settlements. The volcano's rocky outcrops themselves stand on the river's right bank, away from the village, with no marked route leading to them — it is a nature monument without tourist infrastructure.
Nearby, 7-10 km to the south, are several other geological landmarks of the Kuvandyksky district — the Palets Rock (Devil's Finger), the Blyavinsky Quarry and the Vishnevka Spring, so a visit to the Blyavtamaksky Volcano can be combined with a trip to those sites.
