Description

Koskol Lakes are large karst lakes located 13 km southwest of the village of Burlyksky. They are a hydrological, landscape and ornithological natural monument and occupy an area of about 25 hectares. The northern lake has an area of 15 hectares and the southern one 12 hectares, with an average depth of 1.5 m and a maximum depth of 2.5 m.

The bottom of the lakes is covered with a thick layer of silt exceeding 0.5 m. They are located in the valley of the Tuzlukkol stream, 5 km above the Soleny tract. The depressions of the lakes are collapsed karst forms. The water in the Koskol lakes is fresh and slightly mineralized, with a mineralization content of 0.13 to 0.26 g/l. The chemical type of water is different for the northern and southern lakes: soda for the northern and sulfate-sodium for the southern.

Plant communities on the shores of lakes are represented by aquatic and semi-aquatic species, such as parasol, amphibian knotweed, Tabernemontana reed, common reed and marigold.

The Koskol Lakes attract numerous waterfowl such as ducks, common sardines, demoiselles, lapwings, bitterns, mute swan, grebes and coots. Also in the reservoirs live the marsh turtle, and among the fish - crucian carp and carp.

Lake Northern Koskol is included in the kilometer-long protected zone of the Orenburgsky - Burtinskaya Steppe state reserve.
