Description

Mount Akhun is the highest peak in Sochi, reaching 663 meters above sea level. Situated in close proximity to the Black Sea, the mountain is a picturesque natural site with many unique features.

At the top of the mountain stands an observation tower, built by order of Joseph Stalin in 1936. The tower is made of local limestone in the Romanesque style, which gives it the appearance of an ancient castle. The height of the structure is 30 meters, which allows you to admire a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the coast from a height of about 700 meters above sea level. The construction of the tower was completed in 108 days, and the 12-kilometer road surface was completed in 122 days.

The tower is covered with wisteria, which is especially beautiful during the flowering period. Inside the tower there is a spiral staircase leading to the observation deck. The height of the tower and wide loopholes provide stunning views, including the city of Sochi, the coast, the Olympic Park and even, in clear weather, the shores of Turkey.

Legends and attractions

Mount Akhun is also known for its legends. It is believed that it bears the name given to it by local tribes before the arrival of the Russians. There are more than 30 caves on the slopes of the mountain, including the Big Akhun Cave, which is 1,200 meters long.

One of the famous legends tells of the god Akhun and Prometheus, who was chained to the Eagle Rocks. The brave girl Agura brought Prometheus food and water, for which Akhun threw her off the cliff. Falling, she turned into a river.

Another tragic legend concerns a bride who died in a car accident at the foot of the mountain in 2000. Since then, in bad weather and at night, a female figure in white has been observed near the scene of the accident.

Natural features

Mount Akhun is surrounded by diverse ecosystems, including beech and hornbeam forests, mixed broad-leaved subtropics and Colchis forests. More than 200 plant species have been found in this area, including the rare Caucasian lily. The local fauna includes almost all the species of animals and birds of the Northwest Caucasus, including bears.

Access and visit

The 11-kilometer road to Mount Akhun starts from the Novorossiysk highway and leads to a spacious parking lot. From the parking lot to the tower is a 150-meter walk. The tower is open to visitors daily from 9:00 to 21:00. Entrance costs 100 rubles, free for children.

A visit to the observation tower offers not only historical and cultural immersion, but also incredible natural views, making it a popular tourist attraction in Sochi.
