Description
The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Elani was built in 1809 at the expense of Major General A.V. Urusova. This is a single-altar stone church with a refectory and a bell tower, which has become the center of the spiritual life of the village. The church was in active use until the 1920s, after which the building became a club and then a granary in the 1930s. Today it is in an abandoned and partially destroyed state.
Architecture and cultural significance
Together with the church, a one-story manor house was built, which currently functions as a rural kindergarten. The cellars of the church were connected to the cellars of the manor house, where valuable icons and jewelry were found. The church in the name of St. Nicholas was founded in 1817 and built in 1842. There were two altars in it: in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Epiphany. From 1902 to 1915, priest Nikolai Aleksandrovich Grechenin served in the temple, under whose leadership the temple was expanded and renovated. In 1937 he was arrested and executed.
Soviet period and present
During the years of Soviet power, most of the church was lost; only the Epiphany chapel remains. Currently, the issue of restoring the temple and using it as a parish is being considered.
