Description

The Kungur Ice Cave is one of the key attractions of the Urals and attracts many tourists with its unique beauty. It is located on the right bank of the Sylva River, on the outskirts of the city of Kungur in the Perm region.

The cave is one of the largest karst caves in the European part of Russia and the seventh longest gypsum cave in the world. Its length is about 8153 meters, but only about 2 kilometers are equipped for tourists. The air temperature in the center of the cave ranges from +5 °C to −2 °C, and the relative humidity reaches 100%.

Inside the cave you can see 58 grottoes, 70 lakes and 146 so-called “organ pipes”, the highest of which is located in the Ethereal Grotto and reaches 22 meters in height. The age of the cave is estimated at about 10-12 thousand years.

The Kungur Ice Cave is also known for its amazing ice formations. The most beautiful grotto is considered the Diamond Grotto, where you can see the most unusual and interesting ice formations, including a needle-shaped one.

One of the interesting facts about the cave is that inside most grottoes the air temperature is zero degrees. In summer, minimum temperatures are found in the entrance grottoes, reaching -2-3 degrees, and in winter they can drop to -20 degrees. To maintain the icy conditions, the cave is “frozen out” in winter by opening ventilation holes, which are closed in summer. However, due to frequent visits by tourists, the ice formations are gradually melting.

The best time to visit the cave is considered to be the end of winter and the beginning of spring, when the ice forms are at their maximum size. At this time you can also see many beautiful lakes, which often flood in the spring when the water rises.

Tourism and excursions to the cave

The first historical entrance to the cave is not used today, since it is very small in width, and due to the growth of ice, tourists used to have to cut their way through the ice for several hours. Therefore, you can only visit the Kungur Cave with a guided tour.

Opening hours for excursions on weekdays are from 10.00 to 16.00, every two hours, on weekends until 18.00. At this time, sightseeing tours are conducted, the duration of which is 1 hour 20 minutes. In addition, excursions with a laser show are held at 11.00, 13.00, 15.00 and 17.00 and last 1 hour 40 minutes. The difference in the cost of these excursions is small - only 100 rubles, but the entertainment of the laser show is amazing.

Cost of visit

Due to the costs of maintaining the excursion trail, the entrance to the cave will increase from September 1, 2016. So, even this summer, a ticket for an adult on a weekday for a simple excursion will be 600 rubles, on a weekend 700 rubles, and for a laser show 700 and 800 rubles, respectively. For children on weekdays - 300 and 350 rubles for a simple and laser show, on weekends 350 and 400 rubles, respectively.

From September, it is planned to increase prices on weekends - adults - 800 and 900 rubles for a simple and laser show, children - 550 and 600 rubles. The administration urges tourists not to forget to wear warm clothes in the cave.
