Description
The sculpture of Valery Chkalov is located on Naberezhnaya Street on the left bank of the Ural River in the city of Orenburg. Orenburg bore the name of this legendary aviator for 20 years (since 1938).
This bronze monument, installed on a tall pedestal seven meters high, is clearly visible from Sovetskaya Street. The sculptor depicted Chkalov after he completed his daring flight.
Valery Pavlovich Chkalov, a Soviet test pilot and Hero of the Soviet Union, was born on January 20 (February 2), 1904. He became famous for his daring flights and the transpolar flight across the North Pole in 1937. However, his life tragically ended on December 15, 1938, during a test flight on a new fighter, the I-180, in Moscow.
After his death, a resolution was passed to perpetuate Chkalov's memory. Sculptor Isaak Mendelovich created two monuments, one of which was installed in Orenburg. The unveiling of the monument took place on November 7, 1953.
The six-meter sculpture of Chkalov has become a symbol of the city and a reminder of his achievements in aviation history. In 2016, his great-grandson, Igor Chkalov, visited the city. He, together with his father, heads the Valery Chkalov International Memorial Charitable Foundation.
