Bukobai Yars
Description
The Bukobai Yars are a geological and geomorphological natural monument on the right bank of the Bukobaika River in the Sol-Iletsk urban district of Orenburg Oblast, Russia, 55 km south of the city of Orenburg. Over 201 million years, nature has shaped a fantastical landscape here: dozens of stone spheres, hemispheres and "mushrooms" of sandstone, covered with intricate banded patterns, stand on steep bluffs like sculptures from an alien park. The monument covers 135.8 hectares. The Bukobai Yars have been featured in National Geographic magazine and recognised as a site of Russia's "Living Heritage". Entry is free. Coordinates: 51.248° N, 54.815° E.
Geology
The Bukobai Yars form the best and reference (stratotype) section of Middle and Upper Triassic deposits in the Southern Cis-Urals. It was from this very section that the Bukobai Formation, a geological unit now used as an international reference, was described and named.
The spherical shapes are concretions: rounded hardened masses that formed inside ordinary sandstone, cemented more strongly by calcite and iron and manganese hydroxides. As wind and water wore away the softer rock around them (a process called deflation), the hard concretions remained, turning into spheres up to 90 cm across balanced on thin "stems", like stone mushrooms. Their surfaces are covered with banded, twisting patterns created by the sandstone's cross-bedding.
Paleontological Finds
Bones of mastodonsaurs, giant amphibians up to 5 metres long and ancestors of modern crocodiles that lived 230-200 million years ago, have been found in the sandstones of the Bukobai Yars, along with remains of ancient plants. These finds confirm that during the Triassic period a shallow, warm sea with marshy shores covered what are now the Orenburg steppes.
A Place of Power
The Bukobai Yars are considered a place of power, drawing visitors seeking solitude and meditation: the silence of the steppe, the absence of people and the ancient landscape create a special atmosphere. The best time for photography is sunrise and sunset, when low light brings out the relief of the spheres and tiers.
Getting There
From Orenburg it is about 55 km: the village of Ivanovka → Panika → Pugachyovsky → Mikhailovka. After Pugachyovsky the road becomes unpaved. Along the way you can stop at the abandoned Church of St Alexius in Pugachyovsky and at Snake (Khanova) Mountain. From Sol-Iletsk it is about 50 km along the R-239 highway toward Orenburg to Yelshanka, then a turn into the fields. The dirt sections are difficult after rain; a vehicle with high clearance is recommended.
