Photos of Podstepinskaya Rock

Description

Podstepinskaya Rock is a solitary rock outcrop 24 meters high on the right bank of the Ural River, in the Gaysky urban district of Orenburg Oblast. The rock overhangs an oxbow lake, 8.5 km west of the village of Guberlya and roughly 30-40 km northwest of the city of Orsk. It lies within the Guberlinskiye Gory (Guberlya Mountains) state nature reserve and has the status of a geological and geomorphological natural monument covering 0.5 hectares.

Nature

The rock is composed of shaly, layered siliceous and clay-hematite-siliceous rocks of the Sakmarian suite of the Silurian period. The hematite-bearing layers are cherry-colored or have the color of iron scale, while the predominantly siliceous layers are gray and greenish-gray. All the rocks are metamorphosed: tectonic movements severely disturbed their original bedding, so the layers making up the rock look twisted. The overall dip of the layering is steep and southward, complicated by smaller-scale deformations. The outcrop formed from the most siliceous unit of the Sakmarian suite and represents the southern end of a small, north-south trending ridge whose geological section is well exposed. Podstepinskaya Rock is considered one of the most distinctive rock-outcrop formations of inanimate nature in Orenburg Oblast, clearly demonstrating the petrographic and tectonic origin of the landforms.

What to see

The rock resembles a tower in shape and rises above an oxbow lake on the right bank of the Ural River. From the viewpoint by the rock, there is a view of the Guberlinskiye Gory — low hilly ridges typical of this part of the Orenburg region. The site is known among tourists as a spot for photography.

Getting there

Podstepinskaya Rock lies 8.5 km west of the village of Guberlya, within the Guberlinskiye Gory nature reserve. The reserve is about 24 km from Orsk, roughly a 25-minute drive by car.

Good to know

The rock is part of a regional specially protected natural area and holds the status of a geological and geomorphological natural monument covering 0.5 hectares. As in the rest of the Guberlinskiye Gory reserve, a protection regime applies here: damaging the rock formations or vegetation is prohibited.
