Mount Bolshoy Iosif
Description
Mount Bolshoy Iosif (Gora Bolshoy Iosif) is a peak 530.9 meters high in Primorsky Krai, in the ZATO Fokino urban district. It is a cone-shaped peak on the western spurs of the Livadiysky Range, a southern branch of the Sikhote-Alin. The summit is 2.7 km from the shore of Abrek Bay, and about 43 km in a straight line from Vladivostok.
Where the name comes from
The mountain got its name from the shape of its peak: from a certain angle its silhouette resembles the profile of Joseph Stalin. The regular, almost geometric outline of the cone is clearly visible from Abrek Bay and from the neighboring hills, and this resemblance gave the mountain the name it still carries today.
Legends
A local legend is tied to Mount Bolshoy Iosif: according to tradition, whoever once climbs to its summit will never leave Primorye. The story is still told in the surrounding villages and remains part of the local folklore alongside the known facts about the mountain itself.
What can be seen from the summit
From the summit there is a view of Strelok Bay, Putyatin Island and Abrek Bay. In clear weather the mountain itself, in turn, can be spotted from far away — from the coast of Ussuri Bay and from Russky Island. Such long-distance visibility points to the mountain's notable height above the surrounding terrain and to its prominent position among the spurs of the Sikhote-Alin, which sets the cone of Bolshoy Iosif apart from the less distinctive neighboring hills.
How to get there
The mountain can be climbed along a dirt road that starts near a military unit in the area of the town of Fokino. The climb to the summit takes about two hours. The nearest settlement is Fokino, the administrative center of the ZATO, where the route to the mountain begins; it is also the most convenient place from which to plan the trip there and back.
Location
The mountain stands deep among the spurs of the Sikhote-Alin and clearly stands out from the neighboring hills with its recognizable cone-shaped silhouette. Its proximity to Abrek Bay and Strelok Bay makes it a notable landmark for those traveling along this part of the Primorsky Krai coast.
