Description

Cape Shmidta (Mys Shmidta) is located at the southeastern tip of Russky Island, within the Vladivostok city district of Primorsky Krai. It is a rocky cliff rising from 79 to 120 meters above the Sea of Japan, offering a panoramic view of the Empress Eugenie Archipelago. The cape is one of Russky Island's natural landmarks, known as a viewpoint over the sea where visitors come for open views of the ocean and the nearby islands.

History

The cape is named after Vladimir Petrovich Shmidt, an admiral who commanded the Pacific Squadron. Russky Island as a whole was built up and fortified at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as part of the Vladivostok Fortress, a system of coastal batteries and forts protecting the entrance to Peter the Great Bay. Many of the island's capes and bays, including Cape Shmidta itself, carry the names of Russian navy officers who took part in settling and defending these shores.

What to see

From Cape Shmidta one can see the open Sea of Japan and the nearby Empress Eugenie Archipelago, a group of small islands off the southern tip of Russky Island. The shoreline here is steep, with cliffs and rocky outcrops typical of the southern coast of Primorye. Not far away lies Cape Vyatlina, another rocky point on Russky Island with many standalone rocks and small cliffs, popular with the same visitors. The Russky Bridge, which connects the island to mainland Vladivostok, is also visible from the cape. The place is valued for its quiet and open sea panoramas: people come here for walks, sunset photography, and simply to rest away from the city.

Getting there

Cape Shmidta can be reached by car or taxi: the road runs from the Russky Bridge into the island, with a paved surface for about 22 kilometers, after which one must continue on foot along a dirt path. There is also a hiking trail from Cape Vyatlina, about 1.83 kilometers long, passing through several viewpoints before reaching Cape Shmidta — a convenient option for those who want to see both capes in one walk. The nearest natural landmarks on and near the island are Naumov Island and Moiseev Island, located a few kilometers to the north of the cape.
