Description

The Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Kutkovo was built in 1797 with funds from Colonel Artemy Ivanovich Ladyzhensky. Initially, it was wooden, with a bell tower, and had two altars. The main altar was consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God, and the side altar was consecrated in honor of Sergius of Radonezh. The church also housed a zemstvo school, and the parish included the village of Kutkovo and several neighboring villages, including Menshikovo, Verkhovoe, and Vysotskoye.

In the late 19th – early 20th centuries, the church was rebuilt in stone, and another altar was added to the warm side altar in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, consecrated in 1893. The building became brick, and its architecture was an example of a rural church of the eclectic period. The main volume of the church consisted of a quadrangle with an octagon, crowned with a flat dome and a cylindrical drum. An apse and a wide refectory adjoined the quadrangle, and a high three-tiered bell tower completed the composition. The facades of the building were decorated with arched windows and doors with keeled archivolts.

The interior of the church included numerous wall paintings, made in the late 19th – early 20th centuries in an academic style close to Art Nouveau.

After the church was closed in the 1930s, the building was used for various economic needs: it housed a collective farm warehouse and workshops. During the Soviet period, the building was severely damaged: the upper parts of the bell tower and the dome were lost, as well as a significant part of the interior decoration. However, the paintings have partially survived.

The church building is currently in a state of disrepair and requires urgent restoration work. In 1991, it was included in the "Collection of Monuments" by order of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR.
