Amber Quarry (Yantarny)

Amber Quarry is an active amber-mining open pit in the settlement of Yantarny, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia, on the coast of the Baltic Sea.

It works the Primorskoye deposit, the largest amber deposit in the world, holding about 90% of the planet's known amber reserves. Mining is carried out by the Kaliningrad Amber Combine, founded in 1947.

The quarry has an observation platform from which visitors can watch the mining machinery at work from a height of about 50 metres. There is also a museum devoted to the history of amber mining and a shop selling amber products, and guided tours are available.
