Description

The Southern railway bridge is a decommissioned 19th-century structure located in the hamlet of Filino (near Donskoe) in the Kaliningrad Oblast. It is one of two historical railway arches in the area, with the other being known as the Northern bridge.

Constructed between 1886 and 1889, the bridge was once part of a local railway line in what was then East Prussia. It is a notable example of East Prussian railway engineering and has stood as a local landmark for over 130 years. Although the bridge remains on the official balance sheet of the Kaliningrad Railway, it has been out of service for a long time.

In July 2021, the railway company attempted to demolish the structure, citing its deteriorating condition as an "emergency" state. However, local residents staged a protest, physically blocking a bulldozer to prevent the destruction of the bridge, which they valued as a site of childhood memories. Because the bridge is not registered as a cultural heritage site, it lacks legal protection from such demolition efforts. The bridge spans a small stream near the ruins of an old mill in the Filino area of the Samland peninsula.
