Mount Mogutovaya
Description
Mount Mogutovaya is a peak of the Zhiguli Mountains, 265 meters high (about 240 meters of relative height), located in the north of Samara Luka on the bank of the Volga, within the town of Zhigulyovsk in Samara Oblast. It is the only standalone peak of the entire mountain range.
The mountain's northern slope drops to the Volga, while its other sides are surrounded by the town of Zhigulyovsk. On the eastern slope, known as Stone Mountain, stands a sculpture of a mountain goat made by an unknown author in the 1990s. This side of the mountain offers a fine view over the Volga.
Mount Mogutovaya lies within a protected nature reserve and is part of it. From its summit you can see the surroundings, including the Morkvashka River flowing into the Volga.
The mountain's name probably comes from the Russian word "moguchiy" (mighty) or "moshch'" (power); there is also a theory that it derives from a personal name.
The massif of Mount Mogutovaya is a dome-shaped erosional remnant, separated from the main range by two paleo-valleys. Its relief is steep-sided, with rocky ridges on the northern slope.
The Zhiguli Hydroelectric Power Station, built at the mountain's western end, was designed to sit within ancient alluvial strata for greater seismic stability and independence from karst formations.
