Description
The Tiverskoe settlement, located on Vuoksa, is an archaeological complex remaining from an ancient fortified settlement inhabited by Karelians and Novgorodians. In the XIII-XIV centuries it was one of the leading fortresses in the region, whose task was to delay the enemy on the way to the Korela fortress.
The fort was surrounded by a stone wall and rampart, and a wooden parapet was built on top of the walls to protect the soldiers. Here, probably, there were both an Orthodox temple, obligatory for a trade and craft city, and pagan sacrificial places. However, in 1411, the Swedes destroyed the town of Tiversk during a raid on Novgorod land.
Subsequently, due to a decrease in the water level in the Vuokse River and the construction of a road through the settlement, its structure was damaged. Now its remains are subject to natural destruction, and part of the walls is covered with vegetation.
The Tiverskaya fortress played an important role in the defense of borders and control of the waterway between Korela and Vyborg. After several destructions and restorations in the XIII-XIV centuries, the fortress was almost completely destroyed. However, in the 19th century it became a center of archaeological interest, and its ruins still attract tourists and history buffs.
