The Claw of Death (Pripyat)
Description
The Claw of Death, also known as the Vise of Death, is one of the most radioactive and well-known objects in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, located in the city of Pripyat, Ukraine. It is a West German-made grapple bucket that was used in the clean-up after the explosion at Unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986.
History of the Claw of Death
After the explosion on 26 April 1986, fragments of graphite rods, one of the most dangerous forms of nuclear fuel, were scattered around Unit 4. Heavy machinery, including this grapple bucket, was used to clear the debris. It is believed to have been used directly at the destroyed reactor to remove the remaining graphite.
Once the clean-up work was finished, the bucket was abandoned in Pripyat, where it remains to this day. Its surface still bears a black radioactive residue, a trace of direct contact with nuclear material.
Why the Claw of Death Is Dangerous
The Claw of Death is considered one of the most dangerous objects in the entire Exclusion Zone. It carries all three types of ionising radiation:
- Gamma rays — pass through clothing and register on a dosimeter
- Beta particles — dangerous on contact with skin or if inhaled
- Alpha particles — the most dangerous if inhaled or swallowed, causing internal radiation exposure
Radiation levels right next to the claw are many times higher than the average background in Pripyat, which otherwise ranges from normal to several tens of milliroentgens per hour.
What the Claw of Death Looks Like
The grapple bucket is a massive metal grab weighing several tonnes, typical of demolition equipment. Its metal surface has darkened and corroded, with black patches of radioactive deposits in places. This menacing appearance gave the object its popular name, "Vise of Death", among stalkers and atomic tourists.
Where to Find the Claw of Death and How to Visit
The Claw of Death stands in the open within Pripyat. When visiting, be sure to:
- wear a respirator — protection against alpha and beta particles
- avoid touching the surface of the bucket with your hands
- keep time spent nearby to a minimum
- watch your dosimeter readings
Pripyat lies between two radioactive fallout trails, so the background radiation in most of the city allows for brief walks. The Claw of Death is an exception: it is a local source of elevated radiation.
