Description
The Penza Regional Art Gallery named after K. A. Savitsky is one of the most important cultural objects of the city of Penza and the entire region. Founded in 1892, it has become the largest and most famous museum in the Penza region.
The museum began its history with a collection of paintings donated by the Penza governor N.D. Seliverstov. Initially, the exhibition was exhibited for public viewing at the Shvetsov School, and then in Seliverstov’s own art gallery building. Later, thanks to Seliverstov’s generous donation, a special building was built to house the drawing school, which became the first home of the gallery.
K. A. Savitsky, who was also a recommended member of the board of the Academy of Arts, was appointed the first director of the museum. Under his leadership, the museum's collection expanded rapidly through acquisitions, gifts from artists, and generous donations from individuals.
Today the collection of the Penza Regional Art Gallery includes more than 12 thousand works of art from the 17th to the 21st centuries. It covers a wide range of Western European, Russian and Soviet art, as well as works by major Penza artists.
The gallery has two buildings: one of them is located in the building of the Penza branch of the Peasant Land Bank, and the other is in the building of the Governor's House. These buildings are located close to each other and are the main storage areas for the museum’s collection.
The Penza Regional Art Gallery named after K. A. Savitsky continues to play a key role in the cultural life of the region, providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy art from different eras and movements.
Thanks to generous donations and the efforts of directors such as K. A. Savitsky and Valery Sazonov, the gallery has become not only a repository of valuable works of art, but also a center of education and cultural enlightenment. It organizes exhibitions, master classes, lectures and other events aimed at educating and developing interest in art among the population.
One of the special assets of the gallery is its collection of works by Russian artists of the 18th-20th centuries, among which you can find works by such masters as Repin, Shishkin, Vasiliev, Vrubel and many others. These works not only provide historical evidence of the development of Russian art, but also inspire and attract the attention of viewers with their beauty and depth.
The Penza Regional Art Gallery named after K. A. Savitsky continues to be an important cultural center, attracting the attention of both local residents and tourists. Its rich collection and variety of events make it an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Penza region.
