Description

A hollow ball near Dubna, with a diameter of about 18 meters, was located in the forest in the Kimry district of the Tver region, near the village of Ignatovo, not far from Dubna. This ball was made of fiberglass with a honeycomb structure and was a sphere truncated at the bottom, firmly attached to the ground.

Initially, the ball was intended to protect the antenna from meteorological influences, for example, a radar station in a missile defense system. The inside of the ball was spacious, and tourists could move freely inside it, experimenting with sound and examining its arch. A special feature of the ball was its acoustic properties, which were used by musicians for concerts.

In February 2012, an acoustic concert took place inside the ball, which attracted about a hundred spectators. The concert program included various musical instruments, vocals and poetry. Also in 2018, the ED9M group recorded the song “Vologodskaya” inside this ball.

Appearance versions

The appearance of the ball near Dubna gave rise to many versions and guesses. One of them suggests that the ball fell due to a broken cable during its transportation by helicopter. However, this explanation does not entirely correspond to the presence of metal fasteners on the ball.

Another version, disseminated in the media, claims that the ball is a decoy target in case of an enemy attack on air defense systems.

In 2020, another version appeared in the press, proposed by ex-employee of Tvergrazhdanproekt Alexey Vasiliev. He claims that in the 1980s it was planned to build an experimental village of the Ministry of Defense around the ball with houses made of fiber-reinforced concrete in the shape of lentil grains. The ball itself was lowered to the ground by a helicopter and is a radio-transparent shelter, which was supposed to be equipped as a recreation area with a dance floor and one or more horizontal ceilings.

This information was also confirmed by Leonid Simanskov, an electronics engineer from Dubna. According to him, in 1986, the defense enterprise Central Design Bureau Almaz began construction of this village under the leadership of Valentin Efremov together with Tver designers. The project involved the construction of hexagonal houses with three entrances, and in the radio-transparent dome, which was delivered to the site by helicopter, it was planned to equip a cinema and concert hall, divided into sectors.

Breaking the ball

In 2014, a photo shoot with a car took place inside the ball, which required cutting a large hole for the vehicle to enter. However, this could lead to a violation of the structure of the facility.

In the winter of 2021, sudden warming after frost turned into a disaster for the ball, which could not withstand the sudden change in temperature and fell apart in two. This incident led to the final destruction of the structure of this unique object.
