Description

Asylykul, or Asylykul in Bashkir, is the largest lake in the Republic of Bashkortostan. It is located 27 km northwest of the city of Davlekanovo and is located in a basin between the spurs of the Belebey Upland, surrounded by mountains such as Tabulak, Ulu-Karagach, Ulutau, Belekei-Karagach, Bolshoi Nor, Malyi Nor and Zaytulyaktau.

This karst-sinkhole lake is fed by mixed sources including snow, groundwater and rainfall. The water in the lake is slightly brackish with high mineralization. The lake is located between mountains and is characterized by a varied landscape, from a steep southern slope to mixed forests on the eastern side.

The lake is surrounded by a variety of vegetation, including reeds, cattails and reeds, as well as various types of trees and shrubs. Historically, coniferous forests grew in these places, but they were cut down by local residents by the end of the 19th century.

Asylykul attracts numerous species of birds and other animals for nesting and resting during migration. The territory of the lake and its surroundings is home to rare species of plants and animals, including those listed in the Red Book.

The name of the lake comes from the Bashkir language and means “forked lake”. According to the ancient beliefs of the Bashkirs, the lake is controlled by a spirit that warns people of upcoming disasters.
