Description
One of the historically significant buildings in Samara is the Chelyshev apartment buildings, which are considered one of the oldest in the city. It was here that rental apartments first appeared, attracting as residents members of the city's intelligentsia, such as teachers, lawyers and doctors who came to Samara.
Merchant Chelyshev built two apartment buildings, one of which is located on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, building 60. This is a three-story building built in 1899 according to the design of the famous Samara architect A.A. Shcherbachev, stretches for an entire block and is one of the defining elements of the appearance of this street.
The historical roots of this building go back to when the Prison Castle stood on its site. Chelyshev's apartment building is made in the Russian "brick" style, which implies the use of brick not only in the masonry of walls, but also for finishing the facade of the building. The facade and ends of the house are lined with red brick from the merchant Letyagin, while the interior walls were built from cheaper material. The layout of the building is characterized by a corridor-sectional structure, where all rooms are connected by a common corridor.
After the revolution of 1917, Chelyshev's apartment buildings, like many other merchant buildings in Samara, were nationalized. The building on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street has turned into a typical communal apartment. Today this building is classified as an architectural heritage site and is a monument to the history and culture of the city.
