Lake Talkas
Description
Lake Talkas is a freshwater lake of tectonic origin in the Baymaksky District of Bashkortostan, Russia, on the western slope of the Irendyk Range, near the villages of Tubinsky and Isyanovo. It lies in a narrow intermountain depression at an altitude of about 550 meters above sea level and is considered one of the highest-lying lakes in the republic.
Geography and Nature
The lake stretches for about 4 kilometers with a width of roughly one kilometer. According to reference data, its area is about 3.9 km², the average depth is 4.5 meters and the maximum depth is 12 meters; the Shugur River originates from Talkas.
The northern and southern shores are gently sloping and partly marshy, while the western and eastern shores are steeper. The eastern shore is often rocky and covered with alder, birch and larch forest; the western shore, once also forested, has become sparse birch woodland because of logging.
The origin of the name is not firmly established: it is linked either to the Bashkir word "tauly" ("mountainous") or to a word meaning "quiet" — both interpretations fit the lake's calm appearance among the mountains well.
The lake is home to tench, whitefish, pike, silver bream, perch, roach and crayfish, and black-throated loons and velvet scoters nest on its shores. Near the eastern shore, at a depth of 8–10 meters, lies sapropel, a bottom sediment used in mud therapy.
Recreation and Facilities
The lake is a popular spot for fishing, picnics and outdoor recreation. In 2025 a family holiday base called "Yumart", with yurts built in Bashkir style, opened in the village of Isyanovo on its shore. Other holiday bases also operate here, renting out catamarans and SUP boards. According to visitors' reviews, some beaches occasionally have problems with litter removal and toilet facilities, so it is worth checking the conditions in advance when choosing a specific base.
Getting There
Lake Talkas is located about 390 km from Ufa (around 6 hours by car) and 120 km from Magnitogorsk (around 2 hours).
Protection Status
The lake has not yet been granted the status of a natural monument, and its territory is not officially protected. The authorities of Bashkortostan are considering giving Talkas and the Irendyk Range the status of a nature park, which would require environmental surveys.
