Description
The history of the house, located at the intersection of Alexei Tolstoy and Pionerskaya streets in Samara, is shrouded in mystery and important events. Its architectural style, late modernism and use of heavy Northern Art Nouveau forms make it a notable and unique property.
Built at the beginning of the 20th century for the wealthy grain merchant M.A. Suroshnikov, this house is the work of the outstanding architect F.O. Shekhtel, although for a long time his authorship was mistakenly attributed to A. Shcherbachev. Despite Shcherbachev’s participation in the project and construction, Shekhtel made the main contribution to its creation.
In historical context, the house has gone through many changes. During the civil war, it was the headquarters of the Simbirsk Iron Division under the command of Guy, the famous commander of that era. During the Great Patriotic War, it served the military medical institute, and since 1999 it became part of the Samara military medical institute.
Despite its historical significance and status as an architectural monument, the house needed reconstruction due to the collapse of the facade. Restoration work began in 2014, and reconstruction was expected to begin in 2015. This house continues to be not only a witness to important historical events, but also a symbol of the struggle to preserve the cultural heritage of the city.
